In 2003, a group of community-minded people from Centennial Covenant Church learned about the suburbanization of poverty and began to explore if there was indeed a struggling community in suburban Littleton. After talking with local law enforcement, they discovered a community in northeast Littleton where gang involvement, truancy, and teen pregnancy were prevalent. This group then decided to start an after school kids club out of an apartment right in the neighborhood.
Soon, they had grown out of the apartment and began partnering with a neighborhood church for a facility. In 2005, North Littleton Promise became a registered non-profit organization. In the first couple of years, we focused on developing boys and girls clubs, as well as a boys soccer team. A local mentoring organization, Save Our Youth, partnered with us to offer trained and supervised mentors to the kids in North Littleton.
North Littleton Promise has matured into an organization which partners with many local churches, businesses, and organizations - such as Bemis Library, which helps our families acquire library cards and welcomes weekly visits from our summer program students, and Littleton Soccer, which hosts our soccer teams filled with eager players every Fall and Spring season.
Because of these partnerships, North Littleton Promise students are able to engage in a variety of programs and experiences, including Eagle Lake Day Camp and Overnight Camp, Beyond the 90 Soccer Camp, and weekly field trips throughout the community for our Summer Academy and Adventure Days students.
In 2010, the City of Littleton presented founding Director, Katie Brooks, and current Executive Director, Maureen Shannon, with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award.
